Hi, how can we help?

How do I spot and protect myself from scams?

Best Practices for Scam Protection

  • Keep personal details private: Never share your OTP, password, or ShopeePay PIN.

  • Avoid suspicious links or attachments: Do not scan QR codes, open links, or download attachments from messages on platforms like WhatsApp, Viber, or Messenger—even within the Shopee app.

  • Scan for malware regularly: Keep your device secure by scanning for potential malware.

  • Stick to official channels: Only trust messages from official Shopee channels, such as emails with the @shopee.com domain or verified social media accounts.

  • Stay on Shopee for transactions: Avoid dealing with sellers who direct you to complete transactions outside of Shopee.

  • Spot fake websites: Watch for misspellings and typos that can indicate fraudulent sites.

  • Act quickly if you suspect fraud: If you’ve entered sensitive details on a fake website, change your passwords, alert your bank, and monitor your credit card for unexpected charges.

  • Verify all communications: Confirm with Shopee Customer Service if you receive suspicious messages or requests.

  • Enable two-factor authentication: Add an extra layer of security to your account.

Ways to spot scams and what you can do to avoid them:

Scams are usually recognizable by:

  • Non-Shopee links that request personal and sensitive information, such as one-time passwords (OTPs), account passwords, credit card CVV/expiration date, or ShopeePay PINs.

  • Poor spelling and grammar in messages, emails, or websites.

  • Too-good-to-be-true offers, like unrealistically low prices or vague reward promises.

  • Impersonation of Shopee staff with tactics like:

    • Fake texts or pop-ups claiming you’ve won prizes.

    • Alerts about account issues asking for sensitive info (OTPs, passwords, ShopeePay PINs).

    • Requests for ShopeePay payments to specific numbers

⚠️ Note

Shopee will never ask for money outside the platform or through unauthorized channels.

  • Fake calls from people impersonating Shopee customer service, asking for personal info or money for non-existent issues.

  • Scammers asking for remote access to your device to "fix problems."

  • Calls or messages from unknown numbers pretending to be Shopee or courier partners.

QR Scams

Some "Shopee Sellers" may ask you to pay outside the app. They offer a discount, cancel your order, then reach out via messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber, sending a fake "ShopeePay QR code" for payment. Once you pay, they disappear without fulfilling the order.

To avoid this: Never accept off-app offers or QR payments. Always transact within the Shopee app, and report any seller asking otherwise, immediately.

Cash-On-Delivery (COD) Scams

Paying for parcels you didn’t order or that don’t match your actual purchase. Some companies, including scammers, bundle packages from various sellers and send them to delivery companies, who then deliver them and collect payment. The cash goes back to the sender, often leaving you with an unwanted item.

To avoid this: Always verify the parcel before paying. Check your "My Purchase" history when in doubt, and inform anyone receiving parcels on your behalf about the expected delivery.

Parcel Scams

Scammers may request extra payment, claiming issues with your parcel’s weight. They’ll message you outside Shopee, asking for a higher shipping fee with promises of a refund on the initial fee. After you pay, they disappear.

To avoid this: Legitimate sellers won’t request payments outside Shopee. If in doubt, contact Shopee Customer Service immediately.

Lucky Draw Scams

Scammers send messages claiming you’ve won a prize and request personal and financial information to claim it. In “lucky draw” scams, they may say you won a Shopee Contest, asking for your OTP, contact number, or credit card details. Shopee will never ask for these.

To avoid this: Shopee values user security and data privacy and never requests personal information. Verify the identity of anyone contacting you, monitor your card transactions, and remember that Shopee announcements are only shared through official Shopee channels.

Part-time Job Scams

Scammers may reach out via Viber, WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram offering fake part-time jobs with Shopee, claiming you’ve been selected for extra income. They ask for an upfront payment but never deliver. Some may refund small amounts at first to build trust, but as the value increases, the refunds stop.

To avoid this: Shopee never recruits through messaging platforms and does not have a role called “Online Purchasing Agent.” We never ask for advance payments or deposits to work with us. All finance-related transactions should only be done through the Shopee App or official website. If you are interested in applying for Shopee, visit our Shopee Careers page.

⚠️ Note

Beware as scammers may use spoofed headers to make their messages look like they’re from Shopee.

Complete Order Scams

Scammers might claim that you can earn a profit if you transfer money for them to invest for you, or release payment early for them to resell the products you purchased.

Scammers may ask you to select the "Order Received" before getting your items. If you do the payment will be released to the scammer. Protect your money and only confirm orders when you've received your items.

To avoid this: Do not trust sellers who try to convince you to select Order Received before you receive your items. Do not engage in other types of transactions (other than buying) on Shopee, such as a resale transaction.

Impersonation Scams

Scammers pretend to be either official personnel of organizations or Shopee employees to cheat money out of unsuspecting victims.

How it works in different scenarios:

#1: There have been reports of individuals receiving calls, emails, and text messages from couriers or Shopee employees asking for personal info and money transfers for parcel release.

#2: Watch out for scams posing as Shopee employees offering high-paying roles after a survey. Victims transfer money for a "task package" but end up unable to withdraw earnings. Stay alert!

To avoid this: Make sure to track your order within the app. Shopee never asks for advance payments for jobs. Stay alert, don't trust unofficial sources.

⚠️ Note

Shopee will never ask for any of your credit/debit card details for verification purposes. If you receive any calls or text messages from someone claiming to be a Shopee customer service agent asking for such details, please hang up immediately and do not disclose your personal data.

⚠️ Note

Shopee and Shopee Mall do not have any operations in Zambia. Shopee is available in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Latin America. You can find the latest list of markets at the bottom of the Shopee homepage via your desktop browser.

In all of the above examples, the scammers may get you to do one of the following:

  • Share your OTP/account password/ShopeePay PIN

  • Share your personal data such as your date of birth which customer service agents may use to verify a buyer's identity

  • Make payment to a number they provide

  • Click on any link that will redirect you to a third-party page

  • Urgently asks you to transfer money or release payment to them
